Which eFoil Should a Beginner Start On?

Duotone's electric lineup comes in three versions: the Foil Cruise Set AL, the Foil Assist Set AL and the Foil Assist Set D/LAB. All three run on the same system: two compact batteries in a waterproof box worn on a harness around your hips, plus a watch-style remote with a finger ring. Keeping the batteries off the board means it stays light and rides like a normal foil board. What changes from set to set is the mast, and for a beginner that's the part that matters most.

Foil Cruise Set AL: Built for Learning

This is the one I recommend for most first-timers. The aluminum eMast Cruise is 80 cm, a little shorter than the other two, so you're closer to the water while you figure out balance and how high to ride. The motor sits low on the mast, just above the fuselage, which gives you smooth, steady push to get up on foil.

It also comes with a propeller guard. The guard costs you a little battery life, but it adds a real layer of safety while you're still falling a lot. Expect around 30 to 50 minutes of ride time per charge, depending on your weight, setup and conditions.

Foil Assist Set AL: Your Next Step

The Foil Assist AL uses a longer 84 cm aluminum mast with the motor built into the mast itself and a folding prop that tucks away when you're riding a wave. It's designed to help you get up and out, then switch off and glide like a regular foil. That makes it great once you're comfortable on foil and want to use the motor to catch waves or link bumps, but it's more than a true beginner needs.

Foil Assist Set D/LAB: For Experienced Riders

The D/LAB version swaps the aluminum mast for a lighter carbon one with a slimmer, lower-drag profile. It turns sharper and goes faster, and it's the top of the line. If you already foil well and want the best-performing setup, this is it. For learning, the extra cost buys performance you won't feel yet.

So Which One Should You Get?

  • Brand new to foiling: Foil Cruise Set AL. Shorter mast, prop guard included, and the easiest learning curve.
  • Already foiling, want help catching waves: Foil Assist Set AL.
  • Experienced rider who wants the lightest, fastest setup: Foil Assist Set D/LAB.

One thing to know before you buy: all three sets need a fuselage adapter to connect your foil to the eMast, and it's sold separately. Tell us which foil you're running and we'll make sure you get the right one.
