Riders consistently underestimate how much difference extremities make. A 4/3mm suit with good boots, gloves and a hood will keep you out longer than a 5/4mm suit with bare hands and feet. Heat escapes fastest from your head, hands and feet, and once those go numb the session is effectively over regardless of how warm your core is.

If you are building a winter kit on a budget, buy boots first, then gloves, then a hood.
